About Night Guard (Occlusal Splint)

Many people grind or clench their teeth in their sleep without knowing it. Over time, this can wear down enamel, crack teeth and cause jaw soreness and morning headaches. A night guard sits between the teeth to absorb the force.

A custom guard made from impressions of your mouth fits far better than a shop-bought one and is more comfortable to sleep in.

Benefits

  • Protects teeth from wear and cracks
  • May ease jaw soreness and morning tension
  • Custom fit for comfort
  • Protects crowns and fillings

Who it suits

  • Grinding or clenching at night
  • Worn or chipped teeth
  • Jaw pain or morning headaches linked to clenching

Safety and what to tell us

  • A guard protects teeth but does not stop the habit itself
  • Tell us about jaw joint problems or sleep conditions
  • It must be cleaned daily and checked regularly

What to expect

  1. Examine. We examine your teeth and jaw and discuss your symptoms.
  2. Impressions. We take impressions to make the guard.
  3. Fit. The finished guard is checked and adjusted for comfort and bite.

Sessions

Usually two visits: one for impressions and one for fitting. A check-up follows.

Downtime

None. It can take a few nights to get used to wearing it.

Aftercare

  • Clean the guard daily with a soft brush and cool water
  • Store it in its case
  • Bring it to your check-ups so we can check the fit
