About Root Canal Treatment (RCT)

A root canal treatment removes infected or damaged tissue from inside a tooth, cleans the space and seals it. It relieves pain and lets you keep your own tooth instead of having it removed. Despite its reputation, it is done under local anaesthetic and should feel like having a filling.

Benefits

  • Relieves toothache and infection
  • Saves your natural tooth
  • Prevents the problem spreading
  • Comfortable under local anaesthetic

Who it suits

  • Severe toothache or sensitivity to heat
  • A tooth with deep decay or infection
  • Swelling or a pimple on the gum near a tooth

Safety and what to tell us

  • See us quickly if you have swelling, fever or severe pain
  • A crown is often advised afterwards to protect the tooth
  • Some soreness afterwards is normal, but tell us if it is severe or lasts

What to expect

  1. Diagnosis. We examine the tooth and take an X-ray.
  2. Cleaning. Under local anaesthetic the infected tissue is removed and the canals are cleaned.
  3. Sealing. The canals are sealed and the tooth is restored, often with a crown later.

Sessions

One to a few visits, depending on the tooth and the infection.

Downtime

None. Tenderness for a few days is common.

Aftercare

  • Avoid chewing hard foods on the tooth until it is restored
  • Take any prescribed medicines as directed
  • Return for the final restoration or crown
